TCHP Histotechnologist - Redbank MOHS Surgery - Full Time - Days

Job Description

Under the supervision of the Mohs micrographic surgeon, the Histotechnologist will embed, section, and stain surgical specimens according to Mohs technique. This role includes maintaining laboratory equipment, slides, documentation, and compliance with OSHA and CLIA regulations, as well as assisting with clerical tasks as needed. Accurate and timely work is essential, as poor-quality slides can directly impact patient diagnosis and treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Embed, section, and stain tissue specimens for Mohs surgery, including routine and special stains.
  • Prepare frozen tissue sections, operating the cryostat to ensure proper blade alignment, temperature, and freezing quality.
  • Use a microscope to evaluate tissue sections for quality and completeness, ensuring slides are suitable for accurate diagnosis by the Mohs surgeon.
  • Recognize key skin structures, including the epidermis, to ensure proper orientation and sectioning of specimens.
  • Operate and maintain automated equipment, including slide stainers and slide printers.
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness, monitor reagents, and ensure proper labeling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and specimens in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory documentation and logs, including preparation for CLIA inspections, equipment maintenance, repairs, and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Maintain and update the Mohs procedure manual, SDS book, and hazardous waste stream surveys to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare reagents, solutions, and stains according to specific instructions and labels.

    Troubleshoot and resolve histology-related issues within the laboratory.
  • Use Epic EHR to print surgical schedules and patient correspondence and assist with other clerical duties as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the laboratory and surgical team.


Qualifications

EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED required; associate's or bachelor's degree in Histotechnology, Biology, or a related field preferred.



YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: Minimum of two years in a clinical laboratory setting, including at least one year as a Histotechnologist; experience in Mohs surgery preferred.



REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Proficiency in embedding, frozen sectioning, and staining of tissue specimens; ability to operate and troubleshoot a cryostat and automated slide stainer/printer; use of a microscope to evaluate tissue sections for quality and recognize key skin structures; knowledge of laboratory safety, hazardous chemical handling, and proper disposal procedures; familiarity with CLIA compliance and lab documentation practices; basic computer skills including use of electronic health records (EHR) such as Epic; strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment.
