Job Description
Operates mammography equipment to produce diagnostic breast images. May assist Radiologist with needle localizations and any other special procedures required. The technologist must be able to produce quality images to present to the radiologist for interpretation and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibility:
- Positions patient, obtains images and archives procedures according to established protocol producing diagnostic quality images within the clinical image quality standards established by the ACR.
- Documents pertinent patient information such as breast health history, family history, scars, moles, location of lumps, etc.
- Correctly inputs all patient information into ID flasher systems.
- Documents pertinent patient information including beast health history, family history, scars, moles, location of lumps, etc.
- Knowledge of quality control procedures.
- Educates patient on breast self-exams, providing literature and answering questions as needed.
- Notifies patient of need to return for additional imaging studies.
Assists Radiologist:
- Follows needle localization protocol, which includes informing family of the progress of the procedure.
- Documents test and significant facts on the Patient History Form.
- Cooperation with radiologist in his/her request for additional studies.
Assists Radiologist during core needle biopsies if applicable.
Customer Service Standards:

- Greets patients by introducing self and asking patient to verify their name and date of birth.
- Explains procedure and solicits questions to assure understanding, showing sympathy and using discretion when communicating with patient.
- Is proactive in anticipating needs of the patient, keeps patient and family informed of delays, answers questions and responds appropriately to concerns following up on issues or contacting someone who can.
- Communicates with all customers, coworkers, physicians, and their office staff in a professional manner respecting differences.
- Attempts to expedite house patient tests.

- Provides for mobility of patient through any needed physical assistance recognizing patients decreased tolerance to hot/cold and tries to provide patient comfort.

- Attempts to reduce patient's anxiety and fears. Repeats instructions if necessary.
- Is careful in positioning realizing that skin is fragile.
Information System Responsibility:
- Verifies all images are matched and linked in PACS.
- Obtains patient's signature on release form and faxes for previous outside films.
- Answers phone using correct courteous manner.
- Maintains a working knowledge of all Information Systems, including but not limited to RIS and PACS. Scans documents, enters data correctly, charges, tracks data correctly and in a timely manner.
- Verify physician orders for accuracy and act upon appropriately.
- Knows process and can perform task of burning images to a CD.
Patient Safety Responsibility: Radiation and General Safety
- Utilizes appropriate radiation reducing techniques that do not compromise high quality images.
- Protects patients, self, and all other personnel from radiation exposure.
- Observe patient and assists as necessary to minimize risk of falls or other injury.
- Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals including but not limited to appropriate hand washing, proper identification of patients, labeling containers, meds administration etc.
- Complies with all HIPAA requirements, maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
- Understands and could execute policies and procedures in cases of medical emergency, fire, tornados, and other emergency situations.
General Department Accountability:
- Maintains knowledge and skills to perform duties and stay current with changes as they occur by attending 75% of all department meetings. Participates in department in-services and reviews memos, emails, and bulletins for areas of responsibility.
- Works to accommodate patients scheduling needs; to best to utilize personnel and equipment while maintaining quality. Works cooperatively with reception staff in all modalities assisting as needed.
- Keeps rooms stocked and equipment cleaned according to department standards. Performs other duties as required or directed.
- Reports all equipment problems to leadership, clinical engineering, and coworkers, keeping informed of status. Properly uses and maintains equipment utilizing safety techniques. Is proactive in identifying issues and works to get them resolved in a timely manner.
- Adheres to time and attendance policy and discuss any variation from the schedule with leadership.
- Maintains appropriate active credentials (state licensure and ARRT) and submits within established requirements by Imaging policy.
- Demonstrates willingness to assist in departmental changes to improve workflow and learn new processes and duties as needed to keep department viable.
Performs other duties within scope of practice as assigned.

Qualifications
EDUCATION:
- Graduate of accredited school of Radiologic Technology, and/or has completed on the job experience/training which allows the technologist to obtain certification.
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
- 1 year experience. in Mammography preferred.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of medical terminology,patient positioning, and equipment operation.
- 5 C.E. hours in Mammography required each year OR 15 C.E. hours within a three-year period.
