Genetic Counseling Assistant

Job Description

Assists the Genetic Counselors and office staff in the Precision Medicine Program with administrative and clinical support to the Genetic Counseling Clinic and High-Risk Cancer Screening Clinic. This includes hereditary cancer and cardiac conditions, prenatal and preconception genetics. Tasks involve collecting medical records, answering patient questions regarding the Genetic Counseling Clinic and High-Risk Cancer Screening Clinic, disclosing negative genetic test results, data tracking and collection, as well as other follow-up tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Provides basic patient services: follow-up phone calls, requests for information, specimen collection follow-up, results phone calls, answer patients' questions as needed, among other duties as requested by the Precision Medicine team.
  • Provides appointment follow-up assitance: managing incoming genetic testing results, drafting genetic testing results letter, calling out normal results, with additional duties as assigned.
  • Database Management.
  • Available as a resource for patients, family members, and associates as needed.
  • Maintain inventory of genetic testing collection kits.
  • Assisting the Precision Medicine team with updating clinical guidelines for genetic testing.
  • Seeks out opportunities to increase knowledge and skills in area of expertise.
  • Performs other duties as requested or assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION: High School Diplomate required; Bachelor's degree required

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: None required.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:



Ability to work autonomously or within a team, completion of department orientation and orientation provided training, ability to follow written or verbal instruction effectively; willingness to work under supervision; ability to communicate with patients over the phone and discuss basic genetic counseling concepts; empathy and sensitivity when conveying information; ability to use Microsoft software (specifically Excel and PowerPoint). Experience with Epic preferred.
