Job Description
Oversee the inspection, testing and maintenance of installed fire protection systems including but not limited to fire alarm systems and water-based fire protection systems. Also conduct inspections and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers, exit lighting, fire and life safety (FLS) system smoke and fire barriers including open protective doors. Assuring compliance with hospital policies, local, state, and federal codes.
Responsibilities
Complete the inspection, testing and maintenance of the fire alarm systems, which will include troubleshooting, predictive and preventive maintenance, inspections, testing operations, service repairs or replacement of defective devices discovered during testing. Perform basic programming, as needed.
Complete the inspection, testing and maintenance of the water-based fire protection systems which will include predictive and preventive maintenance, inspections, testing operations, minor service repairs or replacement of minor system components discovered during testing.
Complete the inspection, testing and maintenance of the fire and life safety (FLS) system smoke and fire barriers to include opening protective doors and other associated devices. Follows up on contractors that have completed the above the ceiling installations for compliance.
Complete the inspection and maintenance of portable fire extinguishing systems which will include monthly inspections and replacement of defective units, as needed.
Complete the inspection and maintenance of exit signs which will include monthly inspections and replacement of bulbs, as needed.
Complete monthly environment of care (EOC) rounding using a web-based inspection program to assess code compliance with respect to building, fire, and life safety requirement.
Completes coordination for the inspection, testing and maintenance of gravity fire dampers, gravity fire shutters, kitchen fire extinguishing systems and gaseous fire extinguishing systems.
Maintain all applicable fire testing documents and ensure that they are filed in the appropriate location.
Maintain current knowledge of all applicable codes, regulations, standards and accreditation requirements for the area of responsibility.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Associate's Degree in a technical area preferred. Understanding of fire alarm systems, water-based fire protection systems work through on the job or specialized training.
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 5 years with experience in the inspection, testing and maintenance of fire and life safety systems.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of life safety requirements of the Joint Commission (TJC); familiarity with regulations of the Fire Code, Building Code, the Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) and NFPA standards for fire protection systems (i.e., NFPA 13, 25, 72). Able to work with hand tools, handle fire equipment, operate fire protection systems. Able to proficiently use safety equipment and instruments. Able to read and write legibly; use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint). Operate/troubleshoot basic office equipment required for the position. Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; collaborate and accept direction. Able to think critically; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; work well under pressure; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; work independently with minimal supervision. Able to distinguish colors as necessary; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone and identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace; see adequately to read computer screens, and written documents necessary to the position.
