PATIENT TRANSPORTER

Responsibilities

Transports Patients to and from scheduled treatment appointments by the use of stretchers, wheelchairs, beds, ambulation.

• Assess patient's ability to transfer to mode of transportation.

• Refers patients perceived to be incapable of transferring without assistance to nurse.

• Reviews handoff report for essential information to care for patient during transport.

• Transportation of patients is carried out in a timely manner according to department guidelines.

• Assists patients to and from wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds with technical staff and nursing assistance as needed.

• Transport assignments are dispatched electronically.

Observes departmental and hospital safety policies and procedures, including but not limited to:

• Maintains safety standards and uses proper body mechanics while assisting patients in transfer to and from beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, and ambulating.

• Follows patient identification policy (4.22.137) during each transport.

• Safety precautions, i.e. side rails are always in place during transportation.

• Assists with patient care activities such as positioning, lifting, and turning patients, restraining combative patients, assisting patients out of bed during transport process.

• Properly handles oxygen tanks, infusion pumps, IV's and other medical equipment.

• Utilizes universal precautions at all times when transport or handling patients.

• All patient information is held in confidence at all times.

• Uses and maintains equipment according to vendor protocol and departmental standards.

• Perform related duties based on departmental needs.

Unit Responsibility/Accountability

• Serves as a positive role model - maintains a positive attitude.

• Participates in unit governance activities.

• Responds to scheduling responsibilities with timeliness.

• Utilizes the time and attendance system appropriately.

• Contributes to unit performance improvement activities.

• Participates in Peer Evaluation process.

• In-services and unit meetings are attended.

• Maintains the integrity of unit equipment. Cleans all equipment after each use.

• Completes all unit assignments as assigned.

• Assists visitors to designated areas as needed.

• Performs other duties as required or directed.

Patient Contact:

• Associate transports newborn, infant, adult, adolescent and geriatric patients via wheelchair, beds, or stretcher to departments/units.

• Evidence exists that the employee has obtained age specific education and training.

Maintains clutter-free environment within the hospital and surrounding areas.

• Assigned specific areas to monitor by lead transporter.

• Expected to clear unwanted equipment such as wheelchairs, O2 tanks, stretchers, and beds.

Attends required in-services, including but not limited to:

• Demonstrates proficiency in CPR.

• Completes yearly education/competency review per department guidelines.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

EDUCATION:

High School Graduate or GED

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

1 year of customer service experience preferred.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:

BLS for healthcare provider
