Job Description
The practice of nursing requires specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to provide care to groups and individuals. The RN utilizes knowledge derived from the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. All care is provided based on the concepts inherent in the model of care for TCH which promotes an on-going partnership between patients and families and the team of healthcare providers. The care is culturally based and age specific. The RN adheres to American Nursing Association (ANA) code of ethics and to the scope of practice described in the Ohio Nurse Practice Act.
Responsibilities
Implementation - Teaches childbirth and related educational programs to expectant parents, and/or family members.
1) Delivers class content using appropriate teaching techniques. Adjusts classes content to needs of participants
2) Communicates content in an effective and understandable manner.
3) Provides class materials at the appropriate times.
4) Allows individuals to participate at their own level of interest and capability, engages participants in discussion and activities.
5) Provides a verbal outline to all participants stating objectives.
6) Arranges for needed audio visual equipment.
7) Plans for appropriate physical arrangement of room..
Teamwork - Works collaboratively with own Maternal-Child Department.
1) Meets department needs with flexibility.
2) Voluntarily assists others when his/her own work is finished.
3) Promotes cultural and professional diversity.
4) Promotes a pleasant work environment.
5) Meets department standards for attendance.
Systems - Identifies issues/problems that need investigation/resolution and follows-up appropriately.
1) Promotes cost-effective measures to provide positive outcomes.
2) Encourages and supports all research efforts.
3) Recognizes and responds to the needs of the external and internal customer.
4) Promotes positive customer service relationship.
5) Demonstrates the enhancement of personal professional development.
Evaluation - Encourages feedback from other hospital professionals and departments.
1) Asks for verbal feedback from participants.
2) Asks participants for suggestions to improve class.
3) Submits class evaluations.
4) Remains current with policy changes in perinatal unit.
5) Observes sixteen (16) hours per year in Maternal-Child Unit.
Improvement - Willingly accepts new ideas and suggestions.
1) Continuously strives for and suggests ways to do things better.
2) Functions as a productive and resourceful member of groups/teams/committees.
3) Seeks opportunities to learn new tasks and has a concept of self-development.
Leadership - Demonstrates leadership skills such as the ability to motivate, educate, delegate, and mentor peers and other members of the healthcare team while effectively managing the care of patients and family members.
Acts as a resource and educator for multidisciplinary team members and students, continuously evaluating and documenting competency.
Professional Development - Assumes responsibility and accountability for professional growth and development. Contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues and others.
1) Participates in 75% of staff meetings.
2) Supports self and peers in professional growth and development utilizing resources and opportunities within and outside of The Christ Hospital.
3) Completes all educational, requirements to maintain competency related to specific population of patient and/or regulatory agencies (Healthstream education 100% on-time completion and attendance for annual education day).
4) Participate in self review activities to include the positive recognition of staff on a regular basis
5) Prepares for certification specific to work area of professional practice when eligible.
6) Participates in chosen professional organizations, conferences and research is encouraged.
7) Participates in performance improvement initiatives.
8) Participation in community service activities is encouraged.
9) Participation in research activities is encouraged.
Productivity - Understands factors related to cost and effective outcomes when planning and implementing patient care.
1) Initiates care in a timely manner, manages workload effectively.
2) Understands and maintains awareness of fiscal responsibility by utilizing staff, time, equipment, and supplies appropriately.
3) Adheres to the Time and Attendance policy and understanding how it could affect patient/family outcomes.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL:

RN, certified CBE instructor, certified CPR instructor.
EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN is required within five years of hire. Current RNs must obtain a BSN or be actively enrolled in a BSN program by 2020.
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: None required
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: The RN demonstrates the knowledge, abilities, and skills to provide age and culturally specific patient care and education. The RN effectively communicates with peers, utilizes appropriate channels of communication and maintains absolute confidentiality. The RN maintains competence and demonstrates evidence of continuing professional growth. The RN demonstrates the ability to accept and implement change and the ability to work in a culturally diverse setting.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:
The RN holds a current licensure to practice nursing in Ohio. Membership in professional organizations is desirable. BLS certification is required prior to patient contact. Certification in area of clinical specialty is expected within five years of eligibility.
