Job Description

Screens and evaluates non-gynecological cytology specimens, performs periodic quality assurance, and assists with policy manual, statistical analyses, and quality program to maintain appropriate accreditation.

Responsibilities

Performs non-gynecological cytology duties effectively to the operation of a non-gynecological lab. Assists specimen collection procedures, such as fine needle aspiration (FNA), making cellular preparations during the procedure, performing rapid staining and evaluating the cellular preparation under the microscope for cellular adequacy. If rapid diagnosis is required contacts the pathologists when slides are ready for evaluation.

Performs cytology related support functions such as accessioning and processing of specimens, staining and mounting of non-gynecological specimens.

Ensures the cytology work area is compliant with all regulatory agencies including CAP, CLIA and The Joint Commission..

  • Ensures all required maintenance is performed and that all policies and procedures are accurate and current.
  • Manages cytology Quality Improvement activities.
  • Organizes and distributes CAP cytology slide sets.


Maintains the cytology slide file in accordance with slide retention procedures.

Maintains currency in the field through participation in continuing education opportunities.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL:

EDUCATION: Bachelor of Science Degree or equivalent; successful completion of CAHEA approved Cytology Training Program.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: Three years recent experience preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: ASCP registered. Experience in quality control, cytology to histologic correlation and familiarity with CLIA 1988 regulations for cytology is preferred.
