Education Coordinator - Sterile Processing - Full Time - Days

Job Description

Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating an organized program for staff education that is directed toward the achievement of professional excellence and information to provide excellent patient outcomes. Focuses on quality assurance and control to continually provide the best patient care while practicing the most efficient methods of attaining excellent patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

COORDINATES ORIENTATION AND EDUCATION OF ALL EMPLOYEES:

  • Familiarizes new employees with physical environment, standards of department, and standards of individual employee's job.
  • Provides instruction and training to employees on procedures of infection control, decontamination, instrument assembly, sterilization, and case cart set up.
  • Instructs staff on opportunities to provide excellent customer service.
  • Guides new employees regarding work performance and practices.
  • Continues to research and study the professional field of Sterile Processing for new processes and changes that will affect work performance.
  • Participates in continuing education programs to update Departmental best practices.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in the policies, processes, and procedures in the department. Responsible for continuing education of staff beyond orientation period.
  • Trains preceptors and coordinates programs for each functional area of the department.
  • Administers skill-based competencies.
  • Modifies educational content, training programs, and methodologies as needed. Update skill lists on all employees as new training is received.
  • Alerts staff to educational opportunities.


QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:

  • Provides monthly activity reports from SPM to the Director. Reports include: employee productivity, general inventory throughput, and error rates.
  • Uses custom report functionality in SPM to produce data as necessary.
  • Responsible for maintaining procedures for tracking instrumentation in the event of infection issues.
  • Supports Departmental quality improvement programs and assists with overseeing statistical information for improvements as needed.
  • Communicates recommendations to department management to improve Departmental operations.
  • Monitor Departmental activities to ensure compliance with guidelines recommended by AAMI, JCAHO, FDA, OSHA, and AORN.
  • Assist with the development of policy and procedure.
  • Identifies areas of concern and implements programs for process improvement.
  • Supervises staff to ensure procedures in all areas of responsibility are being followed to Departmental expectations.
  • Productivity of staff is monitored and improvements implemented to enhance customer service.
  • Assists with other duties as Departmental needs change.


Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Must have skills that combine awareness and knowledge about blood borne pathogens and surgical instruments/equipment. Communication and critical thinking are also needed to help ensure surgeries and/or procedures run smoothly and safely.

EDUCATION: Must be a Certified Sterile Technician. Certified Instrument Specialist preferred.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: At least 2 years as a Certified Sterile Technician. At least 1 year Certified Instrument Specialist preferred.

LICENSES REGISTRATIONS &/or CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Certified Sterile Technician required
  • Certified Instrument Specialist preferred
