Registered Nurse - Chemotherapy - PRN

Job Overview: Works within the scope of the Registered Nurse (RN) practice, and in alignment with standards of excellence and quality, providing excellence of patient care under the direction of the Provider and in accordance to The Christ Hospital Health Network mission.

Unit: The Inpatient Oncology Services/4 West unit is a 27-bed unit. Patients may be admitted to the unit at any time during their journey through the cancer continuum, from initial diagnosis to surgery, chemotherapy, management of complications and terminal care. Patients with medical-surgical conditions and hematological disorders such as sickle cell crisis may also be admitted. Care on this unit is provided by a multidisciplinary team of registered nurses, patient care assistants, physicians, nurse practitioners, case managers, health unit coordinators, an oncology pharmacist, an educator, chaplains, nutritionists, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and respiratory therapists. The team is very committed to providing the best quality of care to all patients and to the continued development of the entire staff.

The RN, Oncology - Chemotherapy may perform the following duties:

  • Respond to patient phone calls regarding side effects, medication refills, and other questions.
  • Notify patients with instructions from physicians about changes in their care. Obtain patient lab results from outside facilities if needed.
  • Ensure abnormal lab results are reviewed by the ordering physician.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient charting.
  • Obtain authorizations for various patient procedures and/or medications.
  • Educate and support patients/families with problems or needs.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory of medications and supplies.
  • Assist physician with procedures and examinations and perform ongoing physical assessment for patients receiving treatment and manage adverse reactions per protocol.
  • Appropriately mix and administer chemotherapy, oral medications and injections.
  • Clean and maintain organization of treatment area and clean chemotherapy hood daily.
  • Conform to OSHA regulations regarding chemotherapy/biohazard waste and dispose of appropriately.
  • Run all CBC's (Complete Blood Count) on the Beckman Coulter and inform physician of results.
  • Ensure compliance with all lab policies and procedures. Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies.
  • Perform lab equipment proficiency testing as needed. Identify problems or factors that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of results. Correct problem immediately or notify appropriate staff.
  • Report concerns of safety, quality of patient testing and quality of testing to the Laboratory Director.
  • Report adverse events to the FDA. Process lab specimens sent to outside labs so they meet requirements for ordered testing.


Education: High School Diploma, Associates Degree in Nursing.

Experience: Two years of chemotherapy nursing experience, private practice setting preferred. Experience with keeping up to date on the mixing and administration guidelines for chemotherapy.

  • Exceptional organizational, written and verbal skills.


Licenses & Certifications: Licensed in the state as a Registered Nurse. Acquire and maintain certification as an oncology nurse within three years of employment.
