Sonographer - Part Time - Days

This position works under the general direction of the Ultrasound Medical Director and/or supervision of the department manager and Lead Sonographer. It requires competencies in a variety of general ultrasound procedures, performing examinations in accordance with ARDMS guidelines and protocols specializing in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The responsibilities include quality care of patients, accurate record keeping, care of equipment and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

1. Performs imaging and procedural duties of a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.

  • Follows testing protocols as established by the Medical Director and related professional standards.
  • Produces quality study images & data by demonstrating competence and proper use of imaging and accessory equipment.
  • Prepares patients and provides ultrasound guided assistance to the physician during procedures.
  • Assesses the patient's physical, psychosocial, and educational needs, and obtains an appropriate history prior to each test.
  • Confirms appropriateness of supporting information and documentation for the exam being performed.
  • Maximizes services and maintains the work flow, performs assignments within the established time duration and actively helps others when needed.
  • Explains testing procedures to patients, family members and other staff members connected to the care of the patient as needed.
  • Rotates On-call as needed for after-hours emergency studies.


2. Employment Responsibilities (Section 2 of Evaluation 20% value):

  • Professional Credentials, to remain current and registered in the specialty
  • Maintains current CPR certification.
  • Health Stream Education, complies with annual hospital and departmental safety and in-service requirements on time (i.e., STAT).
  • TB testing
  • Flu/Tdap vaccinations


3. Integrates and promotes the General Ultrasound functions into the Organization.

  • Works closely with leadership in efficiently using department resources and staffing to volumes.
  • Maintains strict patient health information confidentiality, providing and accessing only those records pertinent to the patient's care, business need or regulatory requirements.
  • Schedules add-on and emergency exams for same day requests following good customer service standards.
  • Respectfully communicates with patient care areas to properly prep patients and effectively secures safe, timely patient transport to and from the area.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all Information Systems, including proficiency on the structured reporting and image archival systems.
  • Maintains accurate and timely order entry and exam tracking in the HIS.
  • Communicates equipment maintenance needs to the supervisor and operates equipment safely and properly.


4. Follows Quality Improvement and Infection Control standards.

  • Participates in Peer Review as assigned.
  • Participates in organizational and departmental process improvement activities.
  • Engages in department meetings and shares responsibility for agenda as assigned.
  • Maintains departmental compliance to safety and environment of care regulatory expectations
  • Keeps the department and holding areas clean and ensures adequate supply of stock is available for operations.
  • Maintains personal and equipment infection control standards for the safe and hygienic delivery of services


5. Performs other duties as assigned by the Manager or designee

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited Ultrasound training program, or 5 years of experience in related ultrasound specialty, with RDMS Registry in Abdominal Ultrasound or registry eligible.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: NA

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

This position requires:

  • a good grasp of cross-sectional anatomy and medical terminology.
  • the ability to perform vital signs, including pulse rate, blood pressure (using automated and manual system), respiration rate, and oxygen saturation.
  • the skill set to provide relevant technical information about the exam to the interpreting physician.
  • the customer service and communication skills to interact positively and constructively with staff, patients and physicians both in person and by telephone.


LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:

This position requires certification as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) in the appropriate field within 1 year of employment. Exceptions may be determined by the individual skill strengths and motivation to attain Registry certification. BLS Certification. Other Credentials Required or Preferred: NONE
