Sterile Processing Technician Senior - Main Sterile Processing Dept - Full Time - Days

Job Description

The role of the SR Sterile Processing is to deliver onsite training for the Sterile Processing Department while working with The Sterile Processing Educator. Communicating the needs of the educator, with up-to-date training, and education within the Sterile Processing Department team is a crucial part of this role.



Sterile Processing Tech III will participate in educational activities that support personnel, partners, and its customer



Along with education responsibilities, SR Sterile Processingwill act as a Sterile Processing Technician.



This position requires a strong Sterile Processing background, interpersonal and communication skills, the demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, as well as the ability to work independently to deliver solutions on time. Strong communication with all departments is necessary.

Responsibilities

Education of New Team Members

  • Conduct onsite education utilization assessments for the Sterile Processing Department.
  • Maintain and uphold the education modules, guideline, and policies put in place by the Sterile Processing Educator and The Christ Hospital.
  • As required, conduct onsite assessments for all onboarding and new team members.
  • Upon request, participate in creation of educational resources, including but not limited to learning modules, quick reference guides, facilitated sessions, and assessment and training templates.
  • Gain knowledge of equipment, products, and systems related to the sterile processing profession.
  • Maintain knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, processing, and sterilization of trays, instruments, supplies, and equipment
  • Maintain knowledge of governing standards relating to sterile processing.


ASSEMBLES INSTRUMENT TRAYS AND PACKS:

  • Unloads instruments from washer sterilizers and distributes to designated areas.
  • Uses SPM to assemble trays according to standards and procedures identified.
  • Follows manufacturer's IFUs to assure proper reassembly is performed.
  • Assembles selected trays and packs using written instructions and proper protocols and practices.
  • Checks for sharpness and proper functioning of instruments.
  • Recognizes and memorizes a large variety of instrumentation.
  • Applies sterilization wrappers and rigid containers to properly maintain the integrity of the contents.
  • Assemble loaner trays as based on the Casechek vendor tray tracking system.
  • Use heat sealer on peel packs.
  • Properly labels each item.


OPERATES STERILIZERS, DOCUMENTS LOADS, AND RETURNS STOCK TO APPROPRIATE AREAS:

  • Performs sterilization process using Steam and Sterrad sterilization. Is able to operate each type of sterilizer.
  • Uses SPM to build sterilizer loads.
  • Checks trays, packs, and basins on sterilizer carts to ensure all protocols and procedures have been followed.
  • Monitors and documents biological and chemical indicator results that all sterilization parameters are met and documented. Accurately documents in SPM.
  • Handles sterile items properly and restocked in the sterile storage area. Locations of sterile items is clearly labeled to increase efficiency.
  • All equipment is continuously monitored to ensure it is functioning properly.


BUILDS CASE CARTS:

  • Obtains surgical reference lists from Epic to build case carts.
  • Collects items from shelves in sterile storage.
  • Uses SPM to locate trays in the sterile storage area as well as those still needed on case carts.


PERFORMS EQUIPMENT COLLECTION/DECONTAMINATION:

  • Disassembles (when necessary according to manufacturer IFU), cleans, and disinfects equipment used in patient care. Use proper cleaning products and disinfectants (i.e. brushes, sprays, wipes, etc.).
  • Transports dirty equipment from soiled holding rooms in patient care areas to the decontamination room. Delivers clean equipment to patient care areas as needed.
  • Uses universal precautions when working in decontamination area (i.e. gloves, face shields, protective gowns, and boot covers).
  • Inspects equipment for signs of wear and/or disrepair. Coordinates reporting to Clinical Engineering and Sterile Processing Supervisor/Manager.
  • Uses SPM to track equipment.


OTHER:

  • Assist with operations on assigned shifts, prioritizing requests and Operating Room needs as needed.
  • Supports staff throughout the shift ensuring tasks are complete and Operating Room requests are satisfied as needed.
  • Ensures effective communication between shifts. Performs Quality Control checks; trends and analyzes concerns as needed.
  • Assembles instrument sets and trays following proper manufacturer instructions.
  • Properly documents and maintains sterilization records.
  • Participates in departmental Quality initiatives and in-service training as needed.
  • May assume additional responsibilities in the absence of the supervisor.


Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Current professional certification with HSPA or CBSPD
  • 3 to 5 years' experience working in a Sterile Processing department preferred
  • Experience implementing systems in healthcare environments preferred.
  • Knowledge of regulatory bodies impacting Sterile Processing and Operating Rooms
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products, computer systems, and software products


LICENCES REGISTRATIONS &/or CERTIFICATIONS :



Required: High School Diploma & HSPA or CBSPD Certification



Preferred: Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS)
