Job Description
Supports the daily activity of the operating room through surgical technologist's knowledge of surgical procedures and coordination/implementation of supply/instrument activities. Demonstrates competency and possesses the technical skills to scrub cases.
Other responsibilities include the role as a preceptor to O.R. staff, plans in-services with the O.R. Educator, liaison between O.R. and Central Service. Maintains positive customer relations; focus is on providing the necessary equipment and supplies to do the case.
Responsibilities
General Duties
Checks daily schedule
Reviews surgical schedule to clarify surgical routine; updates preference lists.
Reviews resources to ensure equipment is accessible.
Ensures all items needed for the case are present. Obtains physician's special instrument prior to the start of the case
Coordinates equipment usage in the operating room
Maintains working order of equipment.
Assists in the development and implementation of new technology:
Coordinates equipment needs for surgical procedure with sales representatives.
Assist with conducting product evaluation
Participate in surgical procedures when necessary.
• Under the surgeon's supervision, assists with suctioning secretions, holding retractors, assisting with skin closure, cutting sutures and irrigating wounds.
• Circulates for operative procedures under supervision of R.N.
• Cleanses operative site.
• Connects drainage tubes to appropriate devices.
• Assists and/or applies sterile dressing
• Assists with patient transfer to bed/stretcher:
• Processes case cart: Disassembles table(s) contents and instruments, and places in proper receptacles for cleaning. Sends (appropriate) instruments to CSR and/or clean up room for terminal cleaning.
Communication
Acts as a resource to the Operating Room staff to assist with operational compliance of equipment relating to safety, maintenance and proper functioning of equipment.
Works closely with Surgical Booking staff in resolving equipment conflicts.
Works with Central Service Tech I to ensure requests for special supplies or equipment are available for scheduled procedures.
Coordinates the borrowing and loaning of supplies and equipment when necessary.
Communicate with physician offices when necessary to prepare for surgical procedure.
Communicate with product representative when necessary to support the surgery department.
Notifies O.R. staff of changes that may affect surgical cases and workflow.
Ensures communication made to surgeon prior to the start of the case if any supplies and/or equipment are unavailable.
Effectively communicates pertinent information to relief personnel so as to provide safe continuity of care.

Participates in educational activities of the unit:
Assists in the orientation of new personnel.
Participates/plans unit in-services as appropriate.
Promote an environment of cooperation and teamwork
Willing to share knowledge with others.

Participates in educational activities of the unit:
Assists in the orientation of new personnel. Participates/plans unit in-services as appropriate.
Communicates procedures and equipment needs with the Central Service Department.
Productivity
Works closely with the management to monitor and control surgical inventory expense.
Takes initiative to help others.
Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to change.
Understand fiscal responsibility by utilizing time , equipment, and supplies appropriately.
Demonstrates knowledge and dexterity in handling of special supplies and equipment and assures its proper functioning. Is knowledgeable of the specifics of the surgical procedure and able to perform these tasks in an organized and efficient manner.
Safety
Performs safety checks on all equipment (power) instruments, etc. for proper assembly, completeness and operation before it is used.
Demonstrates, maintains, identifies and corrects any break in aseptic technique while setting up the case as well as during the surgical procedure. Instruments, sharps and sponges are counted according to policy.
Identifies and transfer surgical specimens according to O.R. policy.
Performs safety check on all equipment (power) instruments, etc. for proper assembly, completeness and operation before it is used.
Correctly prepares and labels medications including dosages and percentages to be used during the case according to type of procedure to be done and/or doctor's preference card.
Keeps operative field free of unused instruments, equipment and sharps:
• Receives instruments from surgeon
• Removes unnecessary articles from the operative field.
Responds in a prompt manner to call. Able to efficiently and swiftly organize needs of an emergency case.
Follows universal precautions according to hospital policy
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS (e.g. BSN required, MSN preferred.):
• Has contact with physicians, families, and other hospital personnel related to care of assigned patients.
• Sound judgment and knowledge of scientific principles must be used.
• Competency in selected skills is required through hospital provided instruction.
• Frequent exposure to stressful patient situations requires the ability to maintain composure in order to respond swiftly and effectively to patient needs.
EDUCATION: Graduate of an approved school of surgical technology
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 5 years O.R. experience as a surgical technologist required.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Experience scrubbing or circulating, demonstrates ability in written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. The surgical technologist is a graduate of an approved school of surgical technology. The approved surgical technologist 's program s are a two year program of education and on the job practice which allows the technologist to graduate at the end of the course, work in a hospital O.R., and take and pass the certification examination within one year of graduation. The surgical technologist functions during operative procedures as the sterile member of the team to hand instruments, suture and supplies. The equipment technologist is a support member of the team that assures all supplies and equipment is available when the case begins.
LICENSES REGISTRATIONS &/or CERTIFICATIONS:
Certification of Surgical Technician required by 2018, BLS certification
Membership in professional organizations is desirable.
